Essays and Rhetoric and Writing by William Garrett, Third Edition
Essays and Rhetoric and Writing by William Garrett, Third EditionIn the Essays and Rhetoric and Writing (Custom UWF Edition) by William Garrett, the writer speaks to students of United States History and English language about the meanings of foreign words. This book presents a few words and phrases in English that are not common to the majority of English speakers, but have been used extensively by Americans. With such a wide range of words to choose from, this is the ideal introduction to the language, as well as an excellent way to learn some new vocabulary.I love the way he addresses the American student: 'What you will learn in this book is more or less the same as that which you learn by reading the favorite classic novels, collected and edited in more than twenty volumes by one of the finest writers in America...' He also reminds the reader that it is a good idea to write from experience. The book is split into four sections, each having a Honoree Citation at the end. In his fi rst section, we are treated to 18th century terminology for things or actions that we would use today. To me, that list is fairly basic, but does present a good starting point for one to get their feet wet in the world of English. The second section introduces us to 19th century authors who are not well known today, but whose work is still quite important, especially in modern history. If you are a fan of Harlan Ellison or Frank Norris, you will probably enjoy this section. It also includes a few new American terms to use in discussing events that have taken place, and for events that could take place again in the future. In the third section, Garrett shares his opinions on those subjects that he believes are very important, but which some people don't seem to understand or agree with. There are even sections on other languages and cultures, including in North America. Students interested in studying literature, as well as those who want to be teachers, will definitely find this one o f the most interesting parts of the book. The final chapter gives information on the latest issues of our nation, and how we might solve them. If you have a problem with these types of topics, you can find this one of the most exciting parts of the book. If you find yourself wondering if any of the topics that are covered are worth reading, you will likely find this book enlightening and informative. As a book for learning to read essay or vocabulary, this book is definitely an ideal read for English language students who are looking for a quick and easy introduction to the subject. I have said before that I would encourage students who want to become writers to read this book, to read it carefully, and then to write their own essay that has what they have learned from the reading essay.
